“I have a healthcare directive not because I have a serious illness, but because I have a family.”
-Dr. Ira Byock
I started my nursing career in 1992. I worked in the hospital on the medical floor in Austin, Texas at the height of the AIDS epidemic. I am currently a nurse manager for a long-established health care group in the surrounding area, where I have been employed for 29 years. I am a Bachelor of Science degreed Registered Nurse and hold Certifications in Advance Care Planning Facilitation and Case Management.
Most of my nursing care has been in adult medicine, working with high risk patients by navigating and case managing complex medical care needs for them.
Through my tenure, I have realized a need for adult advance care planning and preparation. I have witnessed pain, much of which could have been avoided with the knowledge of treatment options. I have experienced deaths, that with the right knowledge, could have been much more peaceful to the patient, family and friends.
This realization has driven me to share my expertise in the field of advance care planning. My goal is to help people understand their options and prepare for end of life their way, while saving family and friends from making the tough decisions at a time of grief and distress.
